CORE International Wins $9.1 Million USAID Enhancing Equality in the Energy Sector for Southeast Asia Activity
Bethesda, Maryland. CORE International, Inc. (CORE) announced today, during National Small Business Week, that the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) awarded the company a three-year, $9.1 million single-award contract for the Enhancing Equality in the Energy Sector for Southeast Asia Activity, focusing on Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand.
Under this Activity, CORE will advance gender equality and increase job opportunities for women wanting to pursue energy industry careers. The team will develop solutions to address gender-based constraints to talent recruitment to effectively increase the number of qualified women and girls pursuing energy-related careers. CORE will collaborate with energy sector employers to design locally-led interventions to hire, promote, and retain women; increase mentoring and leadership opportunities; and develop vocational education
and training programs.
A growing body of evidence links increased gender equality with stronger business outcomes, as well as with more innovation, higher productivity, and reduced absenteeism. Tapping into women’s unique contributions can strengthen power sectors, accelerate inclusive economic and social development, and add trillions to global GDP.
CORE will leverage the ongoing success of USAID’s Engendering Utilities Program by partnership with Tetra Tech, USAID’s Engendering Utilities implementing partner, as a major subcontractor. CORE and Tetra Tech will draw on their experience implementing USAID gender and energy programs, adapt proven training courses, strengthen national and
regional women-in-energy networks, combat unconscious bias at organizational and community levels, and embed programs within local energy sector institutions in the 7 Southeast Asian nations to ensure sustainability beyond the life of the activity.
“As the founder of a woman-owned business I am thrilled to lead my dream project to help women succeed in the energy sector,” said Lois Varrick, CORE’s Director and CEO. “CORE is pleased to support USAID with this activity, which we believe will break down conscious and unconscious biases and build momentum for long-lasting equality. We are excited to assist the young girl, the young woman, the progressing female leader and mentor her on her road
to energy sector success in Southeast Asia.”
CORE’s team for this project, that includes Tetra Tech and Cadmus, are together uniting women in their future careers in energy.
