Partner Institutions
The key role in the USAID-funded DRUM Training Program will be played
by a number of Indian training institutions. These institutions will
be the anchor entities to take the lead in providing technical and managerial
distribution training to some 25,000 utility personnel in India . This
will be achieved by forging strong partnerships between CORE and the
Indian training institutions in the initial stages of the program, with
the institution taking over the training challenge on a self-sustained
basis in the coming years of the program. The institutional partnership
will include a variety of approaches to training such as the 'train-the-trainer'
program, in-class training, distance learning, field visits, case studies,
system simulation exercises, internships, and study tours.

Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) was constituted under section 79 of the Punjab Re-organization Act, 1966 for the administration, maintenance and operation of Bhakra Nangal Project w.e.f. Ist October, 1967. The Beas project works, on completion, were transferred by the Government of India from Beas Construction Board (BCB) to BMB as per Section 80 of the Act, 1966 and the Bhakra Management Board was renamed as Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) w.e.f. 15.5.1976. BBMB manages the facilities created for harnessing the waters impounded at Bhakra and Pong in addition to those diverted at Pandoh through the BSL Water Conductor System. It was also assigned the responsibility of delivering water and power to the beneficiary States in accordance with their due/ entitled shares. The Board is responsible for the administration, maintenance and operation works at Bhakra Nangal Project, Beas Project Unit I & Unit II including power houses and a network of transmission lines and grid sun-stations. The total installed capacity of BBMB power houses is 2793.65 MW.

Center for Power
Efficiency in Distribution (CENPEID), North Delhi Power Ltd.
(NDPL )
CENPEID is the first training institute slated for accreditation
and program certification in power distribution sector in India
and amongst a few in Asia . Set up by the NDPL, a recently established
private distribution utility, CENPEID aims to promote efficiency
in power distribution management for the benefit of power utilities,
their consumers and society at large by imparting hands-on training
to people employed in the sector and undertaking the needed policy
study and applied research to cause a change in the power distribution
management practice in the country. The institute is slated to
be a national resource and shall cater to the skill and management
training needs of the sector as a whole throughout the country.

Central Institute
for Rural Electrification (CIRE), Rural Electrification Corporation
(REC)
CIRE, a training institution affiliated with the REC, has been
engaged in the training and development needs of engineers and
managers of power and energy sector for the last two and half decades.
With a massive training infrastructure upgrading plan under implementation,
the Institute strives to be a focal point for training of the personnel
engaged in power transmission, distribution and distributed generation
in India specifically, and South East Asia in general. Additionally,
CIRE undertakes such activities and creates forums to generate
new ideas and models that will help policies and programs pursued
from time to time by power sector organizations.

Central Power Research
Institute (CPRI)
CPRI, originally set up in 1960, was re-organized as an autonomous
society under the Ministry of Power (MoP), Government of India
in 1978. With state of the art infrastructure and specialized expertise,
CPRI's mission is to emerge as a national leader of international
repute for offering total engineering consultancy solutions for
the power sector. CPRI serves as a premier testing and certification
authority for testing power equipment, and is a nodal centre for
applied research in electrical power engineering.
Over the years, CPRI has built up extensive expertise in the
areas of transmission and distribution systems, power quality,
energy metering, energy auditing, and power systems instrumentation.
CPRI has been appointed as Advisor-cum-Consultant for the APDRP
by the MoP for the states of Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh
for implementing the distribution reforms.

Corporate Training Institute (CTI), Aptransco Hyderabad
The Corporate Training Institute (CTI) of APTRANSCO was set up
in 1989 by Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board (parent entity
of APTRANSCO) with an aim to provide “Excellence through Training”.
Consequent to power sector reforms in Andhra Pradesh, CTI is catering
to the training needs of APTRANSCO and four distribution companies
in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The ultimate goal of CTI is to provide
scholarly and institutional support in areas such as accounting,
human resources development (HRD) and information technology (IT)
to the APTRANSCO employees. The training is aimed at improving overall
employee skills and enhancing efficiency to provide reliable and
high quality power to the satisfaction of consumers at an affordable
price.
CIT is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and an expert
faculty, providing well-received training programs for the employees
of local distribution companies. Practical application of the training
concepts is provided through field visits and hands-on experience.
CTI continues to strive diligently to improve manpower skills in
the power utilities, working toward a better tomorrow in the power
sector in the state of Andhra Pradesh and throughout the country.

Directorate of Trainging and Development (TNEB)
The Directorate of Training at Tamil Nadu Electricity Board
(TNEB) was formed in 1977 to identify the training needs of the
personnel of TNEB and organize courses tailored to suit the requirements
of its employees.
TNEB oversees 4 training institutes and 11 training centers
in the state of Tamil Nadu. The Directorate of Training conducts
in-house training programs, and prepares personnel for external
training programs in India as well as abroad, facilitates employees
to undergo distance education to equip them with managerial skills
like human resources management (HRM), finance, and project management,
as well as prepares employees for continuance of higher education.
For the year 2005-2006 only, some 800 training programs have
been scheduled for close to 20,000 personnel.
Two of TNEB’s training institutes – Staff Training
College, Chennai, and Transmission and Sub Station Training Institute,
Madurai – have been identified as DRUM Training Program
partners by the Ministry of Power, India, CORE International,
Inc. and USAID.

The Institution of Engineers (ESCI)
ESCI is a forum of The Institution of Engineers ( India ), the country's premier professional organization, and this association brings to us certain unique benefits and opportunities which enable ESCI to serve the Engineering Community better in today's fast moving world of technological & managerial changes. Indian Institute of Technology
(IIT), Kharagpur
On Sept. 15, 1956, the Parliament of India passed an act known
as the Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur) Act declaring
this Institute as an institute of national importance. The Institute
was also given the status of an autonomous university. From this
modest start, IIT Kharagpur has been engaged in the steady process
of development with 18 academic departments and five centers of
excellence. The vast tree-laden campus, spreading over 2,100 acres
has a self contained township of over 15,000 inhabitants. The Institute
currently has a faculty of 450, 2,200 employees, and 2,700 students
on campus.

Indian
Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT, Roorkee)
The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT, Roorkee), the
successor of the oldest technical Institution University of Roorkee,
offers 10 bachelor degree programs in Technology and Architecture,
and 62 post-graduate programs in Technology, Architecture, Science,
and Management. The Institute has an average of 360 faculty members
engaged in teaching and research, 3,700 students with nearly 600
Ph.D. students, and 280 students from several developing countries
of Asia and Africa. The institution has a long tradition of offering
continuing education programs for the last 50 years.
IIT, Roorkee also offers its expertise through consultancy services
to private and public sector industry representatives as well as
to various government agencies.

Koradi Training Centre, Nagpur, Maharashtra State
Koradi Training Centre (KTC) was established in 1973 and was
updated to its present status in 1991 by the former Maharashtra
State Electricity Board (MSEB) for conducting training to its
personnel in power sector related activities. Since the unbundling
of MSEB in June 2005, KTC is under the management of Maharashtra
State Power Generation Co. Ltd., and is recognized as a Category
I Institute by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) of India.
It is also a proud ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004 unit.
The Training Center is located on the premises of the Koradi
Thermal Power Station, near Nagpur. The Center offers numerous
training programs for engineers at senior and junior levels,
as well as technicians and general administration and accounts
staff. The institute is well equipped with air conditioned training
halls and auditoriums. It has served training needs by conducting
induction level training for engineers, as well as need based
refresher courses and training programs for generation, transmission
and distribution cadres of the former MSEB. Since inception,
it has conducted 946 courses for some 25,000 trainees.

MECON LIMITED
MECON LIMITED, established in 1959, is India 's
frontline engineering, consultancy and contracting
organization. MECON is a multi-disciplinary company
with 900 experienced and dedicated engineers,
scientists and technologists. MECON's main sectors of
operation are power, infrastructure, metallurgy and
other energy intensive industries to name a few.
MECON is actively participating in Power Development
and Reform programmes launched by Ministry of Power.
It has a full fledged "Human Resource Development" (HRD) department which organizes Training Programmes
for engineers and other officials working inhouse as
well as other esteemed organizations round the year.
MECON is an ISO 9001:2000 company and it is registered
with international financial institutions like WB,
ADB, AFDB and has technological tie-up with world
leaders.
MECON has to its credit of undertaking capacity
building exercise funded by World Bank, DFID and other
multilateral institutions.

National Productivity Council
(NPC)
NPC strives to provide world-class services needed by Indian
industry to become internationally competitive in a globalized
economy. NPC facilitate its clients to work out solutions towards
accelerating productivity, enhancing competitiveness, increasing
profits, augmenting safety and reliability and ensuring better
quality. It provides a reliable database for decision-making,
improved systems and procedures, a conducive working climate
as well as customer satisfaction. NPC seeks to promote productivity
through consultancy, promotion, customized training, research
and institution building. NPC has 14 regional offices, located
in major state capitals and industrial centers with corporate
headquarters in New Delhi , and employs approximately 200 full
time professionals and consultants.

National
Power Training Institute (NPTI)
NPTI, an International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
9001 & 14001 certified organization, is the national zenith
body for training and human resources development in power sector
with its corporate office in Faridabad and at nine institutes covering
all the power zones of the country. NPTI's gigantic efforts in
power training and education are note-worthy and commendable in
view of the fact that the cost of non-training is always higher
than the cost of training. It offers numerous training programs
on Simulators, on-site, etc. to meet the urgent and long term needs
of the power sector and allied industries, and has a track record
of having trained more than 100,000 persons including 70,000 professionals
in over 38 years. NPTI was the nodal agency for evolving the National
Training Policy document for the power sector. Transnational training
ventures with countries like the Philippines, Oman, Malaysia, Mexico,
and Zambia, are an area of emerging strength in NPTI's attempts
to enlarge its canvas.

Power Management Institute
(PMI), NTPC
PMI was set up by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC)
in recognition of the vital role of management development in the
context of the challenges associated with the growth of the Indian
Power Sector. PMI is committed "to be a global institute of excellence
for developing world-class power professionals" by providing state-of-the-art
training and management development interventions directed towards
growth and development of the power sector. Over the years the
institute has emerged as one of the leading learning centers for
power professionals in the country. PMI has strengthened its capability
to support the technical and managerial development of identified
executives for distribution. A dedicated pool of experts and faculty
at PMI is providing training and development of middle and senior
level executives from NTPC and other organizations. An ambitious
effort is now being implemented by PMI to conduct programs for
the power sector in a range of areas related to technical improvement
of distribution systems and distribution management systems, as
well as managerial competency and skill development.

Reliance
Energy Management Institute (REMI)
REMI is the Training and Organizational Development Initiative
arm of Reliance Energy Limited (REL), a major multi-national firm
with an operating private sector distribution utility. REMI has
been doing pioneering work in the field of the power sector, especially
distribution management and employee development for the last few
years. Built in late nineties, the Institute has scaled many heights.
REMI has been instrumental in providing training to the various
state electricity boards in India as well as in conducting courses
for executives from other developing countries.
The Institute covers a variety of training areas right from technical
to behavioral, management related to community related. Over the
years, the REMI envisions spreading its wings not only to the employee
development of REL, but also contributing to the enhancement of
knowledge and skills for the employees of other distribution utilities
and state electricity boards (SEBs) in India.
